Grief doesn’t knock politely before it enters. It shows up at your doorstep barefoot and bruised, dragging along all the memories, regrets, and aching questions that have no answers. When someone we love leaves this world, we’re left trying to reassemble ourselves in a life that suddenly feels foreign.

At Mind Body Hoboken, I’ve sat with many people in this space — the in-between, where grief is too big to name but too heavy to carry alone. And this is where Reiki becomes something more than energy work. It becomes a refuge.

Think of grief as a thunderstorm moving through your body. Your thoughts become clouded, your chest feels tight like humidity before a downpour, and your sleep is restless, like lightning flickering just out of reach. Reiki doesn’t force the storm away. But it invites you to sit under shelter and breathe while it passes.

In one session, you might cry. In another, you may fall asleep. Sometimes, you simply lie there and feel your body soften in places it’s been braced for too long.

Here’s what research is showing:

  • A study in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found Reiki can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, especially in patients dealing with chronic emotional stress.
  • The Journal of Palliative Care includes Reiki as a promising intervention for end-of-life care and bereavement support, highlighting its calming effect on the nervous system and its ability to create emotional space.

But beyond the studies, here’s what I know from the healing table:
One client, after losing her mother, said, “I didn’t want to talk anymore. I just wanted to feel something that wasn’t pain.” After her session, she whispered, “I feel like I have a little room to breathe again.”

And sometimes, that’s the miracle — not that the grief disappears, but that it finds a softer place to live within you.

If you’re grieving, know this:
You are not alone. You don’t need to rush the healing or hold it all together. Reiki doesn’t ask for words. It simply meets you where you are.

When grief moves in, Reiki leaves the light on — and waits for you to rest, even just for a little while.

With warmth and compassion,
Jennifer
